‘Meh’ means ‘Merry Christmas’

Card propped up against small potted pine tree. The card's hand-drawn and colored image shows a black cat emerging from an open box that is partially covered with red wrapping paper. There is a piece of red wrapping paper hanging off the cat's head and a potted tree is drawn in the background of the card's illustration.

“Meh! Meh!” Starfire says when she attacks wrapping paper, or otherwise behaves like the joyous cat that she is. And so, in this hand-drawn card, “Meh” means “Merry Christmas.”

Grateful for libraries, today and every day

Cynthia Parkhill holding library cards
Library cards from nearly everywhere I have lived or worked
I have my advocate’s hat on today, to talk about my gratitude to libraries (continuing with a seasonal focus on things I am thankful for).

Thanksgiving blessings: Work in tough economy

Thanksgiving offers a time each year to take stock of our blessings, and I make a regular practice of listing things I am thankful for. To begin with, I feel blessed by the work I do in southern Oregon’s extremely tough economy.

Fourth of July: Library remains accessible

Thank you to Ashland parade-goers for leaving the mobility walkway clear on Thursday in front of the Ashland public library. I appreciate the unrestricted access to our library amid holiday parade-viewing setup.

Web-ster’s in Ashland: Fourth of July entry

Jonathan Donihue and Cynthia Parkhill holding flags assembled from knit swatches in front of a kniting-covered, circular layer-cake frame on a flatbed trailer
Another prize-winning Fourth of July parade entry by The Web-sters knitting, spinning and weaving store in Ashland: third place in the commercial division.

This year’s entry commemorated the store’s 30th anniversary with a knitting-covered, three-layer birthday cake that was towed on a flatbed trailer.

Designed by Erin Duffy, the float was assembled from knitting swatches. A group of seven or eight people, including Jonathan and me, marched alongside waving flags stitched together from knitting swatches.

Have a ‘super-powered’ Thanksgiving holiday

Superman and Wonder Woman serve Thanksgiving turkey. Seated to the left at the table are Robin, Batman, Martian Manhunter (?) and Green Arrow. Seated to the right at the table are Green Lantern, Aqua Man and Flash.

I couldn’t resist this Justice League “Happy Thanksgiving” graphic, courtesy of the Random House Library Marketing Team, with its accompanying wish for a super-powered holiday to librarians everywhere. Have a blessed, safe holiday with your loved ones.

Parade viewers block access to Ashland library

With the Ashland Chamber of Commerce’s Fourth of July parade behind us, can we talk about access and courtesy? Maybe even -- as we near the 23rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, can we talk about respect for the law?

On Wednesday afternoon -- the day before the holiday parade in the City of Ashland, Oregon -- several people obstructed the mobility walkway that leads to Jackson County Library Services’s Ashland library.

Have ‘safe and sane’ Fourth of July

Have a “safe and sane” Fourth of July, everyone. Keep your companion animals safely in at home; loud noises may frighten them. And spare a thought for your fire department (as well as government ordinances). Leave pyrotechnics to the professionals.

Memorial Day gratitude

This post is by guest author Jonathan Donihue.

I would like to thank everyone who has fought for this country: the soldiers, the educators, the peace activists, the writers and film makers, the librarians, the spiritualists. To everyone who has lost property, fame, freedom, or life in an attempt to make America a greater country: Thank You.

Original fiction: Monkey's Christmas Tree

The appearance of humans was not unusual as far as Monkey was concerned. Normally he shared his home with one mature human female, but today brought the arrival of one of his human's grown cubs and her mate.
