Here is a video that was recorded one year ago, but it is relevant again as we enter a new school year. As part of getting ready for a new year in SRCSA library, I’ll be collecting responses for the “library contract.” Parents and guardians will acknowledge that their child is responsible for the books they check out. Parents and guardians will also acknowledge that they are responsible for discussing with their child, those books that seem a good fit for them.

Library resource sharing: My hands-on experience

The focus of my studies this week, for LIS 5804, is on library resource sharing and consortia. As a prior volunteer for a library system that contributed to a three-county shared catalog, I’ve had direct involvement with the sharing of resources among libraries.

Library location can affect a book’s visibility

During class discussion this week for LIS 5250, one of the ideas that came up was books that formerly sat unused on a shelf suddenly being checked out by students. One thing I took to heart when reading the CREW manual was the idea that it was acceptable to move books to a different (but still relevant) location that got better visibility.

SRCSA library : Return books for end-of-school-year

The last day for student check-out for this school year was on Thursday, May 5. Please ask students to return their library books, as well as textbooks still out to them from last school year.

Turn in textbooks and library books

We only have a few more days until the end of the school-year. Students, if you have textbooks or library books at home, be sure to turn them back in. And teachers, if students are bringing these books to your classrooms, please make sure that I have an opportunity to scan them off students’ accounts.

School library books due during materials distribution

In my latest video on YouTube: I’ve been checking out textbooks and other resources in preparation for our school’s materials distribution that takes place at the end of October. Here’s a friendly reminder that library books will be due during materials distribution; look for the big metal cart in our parking lot, with a sign saying, “Return Books Here.” And if anybody has textbooks or library books that are left over from last year, this upcoming distribution day will be a great time to return them as well.

SRCSA Library : Book check-out during social distancing

Our school is piloting check-out of books by our middle-schoolers during social distancing. Students will place holds, and renew their books, remotely through the online catalog. Books’ pick-up and return will coincide with drive-through distribution days for educational materials.

Video: Setting up user profile in school library catalog

My latest video on YouTube is about creating a user profile in the library catalog for Santa Rosa Charter School for the Arts. I know that with physical-site closures since March and school-year now at an end, many students were not able to return books that they had out from the library. Through setting up their profile, they can look up, and renew, any books that they have out from our library. Hopefully that will give them one less thing to worry about during the summer months. This video is intended to be first in a series about using the school library catalog.
