Among worrying legislation at the federal level, H.R. 2616 recently passed in the U.S. House of Representatives. It’s troubling enough that, under certain circumstances, schools would be forced to “out” trans students to their parents, but I’m concerned about Section 3’s prohibition against “teaching or advancing gender ideology.”
Implementation of H.R. 2616 could lead to a nationwide banning of books in classrooms and school libraries — merely for mentioning the existence of people who are transgender or non-binary. Today I asked the U.S. Senators for California to please vote “No” if and when this bill is taken up in the U.S. Senate.
My additional message, to U.S. Senators who are more politically conservative, was that, as Republicans, your party has traditionally stood for smaller government, and H.R. 2616 seems an excessive intrusion. If passed into law, it would expand the federal bureaucracy, would undermine local control, would limit states’ rights, and would empower federal agencies to dictate personal family matters.
Not only that, but the inherent cruelty and bigotry of anti-trans legislation is at odds with the teachings of Jesus Christ. I’m asking conservative U.S. Senators to please consider these recent expressions of morality by two U.S. governors, one Republican and one Democrat:
“I must admit, I am not an expert on transgenderism. I struggle to understand so much of it and the science is conflicting. When in doubt however, I always try to err on the side of kindness, mercy, and compassion.” — Utah Gov. Spencer Cox
“My faith teaches me that everyone is a child of God, deserving of love.” — Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear
For these reasons, I am asking that conservative U.S. Senators please vote “No” on H.R. 2616. Please uphold the dignity of state’s rights and preserve local control and decision-making. I also asked my U.S. Senators for California to use whatever influence they have in the U.S. Senate to ensure this hateful bill’s defeat.
