Black Girl You Are Atlas by Renée Watson

Each Friday that school is in session, I share the link to a read-aloud preview of a book from SRCSA library. The “First-chapter Friday” selection for April 11, 2025 is Black Girl You Are Atlas by Renée Watson, illustrated by Ekua Holmes.

In this semi-autobiographical collection of poems, Renée Watson writes about her experience growing up as a young Black girl at the intersections of race, class, and gender. Using a variety of poetic forms, from haiku to free verse, Watson shares recollections of her childhood in Portland, tender odes to the Black women in her life, and urgent calls for Black girls to step into their power. Black Girl You Are Atlas was the Young Adult winner, in 2025, of the Walter Dean Myers Award and an Honor Book, also in 2025, for the Coretta Scott King (Author) Award. https://youtu.be/9Mfot96gH_E
