Beta Phi Mu chapter forming at UCM

One item of interest at our SOLIS meeting on Sept. 19, 2023, was news of a Beta Phi Mu chapter being established at the University of Central Missouri.

Beta Phi Mu is an honor society for librarians. Eligibility for membership is “by invitation of the faculty from institutions where the American Library Association, or other recognized accrediting agency approved by the Beta Phi Mu Executive Board, has accredited or recognized a professional degree program.”

Each chapter, or program, may invite no more than 35 percent of its annual graduating class.

At the graduate level, prospective members must have completed at least 50 percent of the total hours/credits required for their master’s degree with a scholastic average of no lower than 3.75 (where A equals 4.0), or have completed programs of advanced study beyond the master’s degree which require full time study for one or more academic years with a scholastic average of 3.75.

Beta Phi Mu’s name comes from the initials of the Greek words “Bibliothekarios philax mathesis,” meaning “librarians are the guardians of knowledge,” and its motto, “Aliis inserviendo consumor,” means “Consumed in the service of others.”

“The insignia of Beta Phi Mu is the dolphin and anchor, mark of the Venetian printer Aldus Manutius.”
