Cuesta College internship: Early impressions

I am interning this spring through the Instructional Media Center (IMC) of Medford School District 549C. A drop-down menu on the district website lists 22 schools.

According to Wikipedia, 13,777 students were enrolled in Medford 549C as of 2012. Its 14 elementary schools range in size from 150 to 630 students (Medford). The district’s secondary education department serves approximately 5,700 students.

Services in the IMC fall within the categories of Library Media Center and Curriculum supports (Medford). Under Library Media Center Support, elementary media specialist Karen Angiolet oversees and coordinates library media center programs at 14 elementary schools. Angiolet told me that each elementary school library has one classified media technician.

Angiolet manages the district’s library management software (Follett Destiny) and engages in collection development. She also oversees the district’s professional collection (Medford).

Under Curriculum Support in the IMC, office assistant Mary Welsh coordinates, manages and circulates district curriculum materials including elementary science program supplies, an elementary textbook depository, junior and senior high curriculum, Light’s Retention (a resource for evaluating if a student should repeat a grade) and audiovisual equipment checkout.
