New English language-arts curriculum at SRCSA

Hardcover textbooks arranged in stacks, by color, on a counter-top. There are stacks of books in orange, green, purple, and bright blue. They all display the words 'Wonders, California Reading/Writing Workshop' on their covers, and additionally feature artwork depicting anthropomorphic animal characters.

Here’s something to look forward to with a new school year at Santa Rosa Charter School for the Arts: new reading-and-writing curriculum, adopted on Feb. 28, 2018 by Santa Rosa City Schools, arrived in June at SRCSA library. There, they await processing by me as Instructional Materials Technician.

Textbooks, workbooks, teachers’ resources, even books for classroom libraries that have been rated for ease of reading. (The technical term is “leveled,” and the intention is to create a successful match between the text and the student’s reading ability.)

These stacks of books, brightly colored and appealing, mean — for me — the enjoyable task of cataloging and barcoding these resources.

The McGraw Hill Wonders/WonderWorks curriculum will serve Kindergarten through sixth-grade. Some of our district educators have already piloted this curriculum at their respective sites (detailed in the SRCS board agenda for Feb. 28).

Here are some of the program’s strengths, as identified by pilot-team participants: repetition of routines to boost effectiveness; options and choices that provide support for students with differing needs; and a strong technology component. The leveled readers’ content is also compatible with other areas of study.
