Two brothers go swimming in a lake that their father used to bring them to in Our Lake, written and illustrated by Angie Kang.
One of the subtle touches that I found interesting about this story is that it didn’t say why the boys’ father was no longer with them. There could be any number of reasons why a parent is absent from a family — death, divorce, prison, deployment — and by not assigning a specific reason for the boys’ grief, the book leaves space for readers who may relate with their own experiences.
Kang’s gouache art beautifully renders the water of the lake. On the book’s cover, sunlight flickers on the surface of the lake.
