Bud, Not Buddy, by Christopher Paul Curtis

Each Friday that school is in session, I share the link to a read-aloud preview of a book from SRCSA library. To wrap up the school (and programming) year for 2023-2024, this week’s preview is Bud, Not Buddy, by Christopher Paul Curtis.

Ten-year-old Bud, a motherless boy living in Flint, Michigan, during the Great Depression, escapes a bad foster home and sets out in search of the man he believes to be his father — the renowned bandleader, H.E. Calloway of Grand Rapids. Author Christopher Paul Curtis was the winner, in 2024, of the Coretta Scott King — Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement. “As a historical fiction novelist, Curtis writes in accessible ways for emerging readers to understand the world around them. His novels have received numerous starred reviews and awards throughout ALA, like ALSC Notables, Odyssey, and YALSA Best Books for Young Adults.”
