Author urging supporters to book library meeting rooms

At Book Riot, writer Kelly Jensen is warning public libraries: author Kirk Cameron and publisher Brave Books are asking supporters to book space at public libraries to hold readings from children’s “books of virtue” across the country on Aug. 5.

Cameron and Brave Books are claiming that several libraries denied their offers to host children’s storytimes. In reality, Brave Books and Cameron failed to reserve the use of those libraries’ meeting rooms. The purpose of the events that Cameron wants supporters to book space for at libraries, is for supporters to read from books that advance “traditional” values.

As Aug. 5 looms, Jensen recommends that libraries review their policies around the booking of meeting rooms, and that they also be prepared to explain to patrons: the difference between library-sponsored events and those created by third-parties who are reserving use of a meeting room.

Jensen further warns libraries that “These are coordinated efforts to prove a point; in the sake of Cameron and Brave Books, it’s to find a ‘gotcha’ with censorship. If you don’t give them what they want, they can cry censorship, even if they themselves are the perpetrators who purposefully subvert the rules and policies.”
