April is School Library Month
Did you know? April is School Library Month, the American Association of School Librarians’ annual celebration of school librarians, library workers, and school libraries.
Resolution No. 2022/23-61, declaring April as School Library Month in Santa Rosa City Schools, came before the school board on March 29, 2023, with speakers Dr. Roderick Castro, Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services; Kelley Dillon, Executive Director, Educational Services; and Steve Irving, District Library Media Specialist.
“School Library Month celebrates school libraries as an integral part of schools and our communities, as school libraries provide materials for teachers and students that encourage growth and knowledge, contribute to an interest in life-long learning, and provide materials to meet the individual needs, varied interests, abilities, and maturity levels of our students. Our school libraries welcome students to their inviting spaces, creating a place for students to engage with one another, work together and access a wide variety of resources, both print and digital. They are a place to come together, something that is incredibly valued in supporting and building community on our campuses.
“Our libraries are central locations on our school campuses, valued and appreciated by our school communities. The work to create a Library Strategic Plan that began in the 2020-21 school year continues as a dedicated team works to refine its goals and actions for future presentation to the Board and community. The plan seeks to highlight the importance of the role libraries play in the lives of our students and emphasizes the commitment to further development of our libraries as thriving spaces at our schools. Honoring our libraries and those that work so hard to make them the special places they are is a recognition of their positive impact.”
