Discussing violence with children, resources from SCOE

Parents, are you wondering how to talk with your children about this week’s violence in Washington DC? Here are a couple of recent bulletins from Sonoma County Office of Education.

1. Advice for Discussing Civil Unrest with Children
“The events that took place at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 are extremely difficult to process for all Americans. ... The Sonoma County Office of Education’s Educational Support Services team has collected resources for educators, parents, and guardians to take advantage of if and when they decide to discuss the current events with their children. ...”

2. Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools Statement on the Insurrection at the Capitol
“As a former teacher of U.S. history and a veteran of our nation’s armed services, I never thought I would see violent and egregious acts such as those that took place in our U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. This will become a moment, along with Pearl Harbor and 911, that teachers will discuss with students as a dark day in our country’s history. ...”
