Zane is destined to release the Maya god of death and destruction from his prison in a dormant volcano. Desperate to do whatever it takes to protect those he cares about, Zane finds himself at the center of a war between Maya gods. As the adventure progresses, Zane comes to learn amazing revelations about himself.
A rich cast of supporting characters — some human, and some out of mythology — surround Zane on his quest.
Cervantes’ book will be published in September by Disney Hyperion under the imprint Rick Riordan Presents. Its sequel, The Fire Keeper, is expected to be released during 2019.
These books, like others to be featured under this imprint, involve themes and characters from world mythology — written by authors who are from the cultures whose myths infuse their stories.
Altogether, I found a lot to like about J.C. Cervantes’ The Storm Runner. My thanks to the publisher, which graciously allowed me to read an advance copy.
One aspect I especially appreciated about Cervantes’ book is that the central character has a disability: one of his legs is shorter than the other. Kids at school have ridiculed Zane for his physical disability, but Zane discovers it reflects the fantastic heritage that he discovers about himself.
