Among member libraries, the summer-reading theme this year for the Collaborative Summer Library Program was “Building a Better World.” In Scottsbluff, Neb., the Gering and Lied Scottsbluff Public Libraries wrapped up their summer reading programs with a bullying-prevention presentation by ventriloquist Kevin Horner.
As reported by Irene North for the Scottsbluff Star Herald, Horner’s performance “ties into being a better person, as well as teaching others that reading can also help to reduce bullying behavior.” ... I’m showcasing it because, as part of speaking out against bullying, I like to promote the resources that libraries provide.
“Horner said one of the most important aspects of having children participate in summer reading programs is research shows children who read are less likely to be a victim or perpetrator of bullying behavior. By supporting your local library, you are helping to reduce those problems, he said. Children have increases in comprehension, problem-solving, logic and reasoning skills.”
