A bicycle trip to the Ashland library netted several beginning volumes in young adult series fiction.
Ashland teen librarian Esther Mortensen recommended The Adoration of Jenna Fox and its sequel, The Fox Inheritance, by Mary E. Pearson. The story involves a 17-year-old girl, Jenna Fox, who has awoken from a coma after supposedly being in an accident.
A publisher’s summary for Adoration sets the story in “the not-too-distant future, where biotechnological advances have made synthetic bodies and brains possible but illegal.” I’m barely into the story but find it an intriguing premise.
Cinder is author Marissa Meyer’s science-fiction take on the “Cinderella” fairy tale. I placed a request after reading a recommendation of series fiction on Buzzfeed. Mortensen also recommended Cinder when I talked with her today.
Cinder is the first volume in The Lunar Chronicles, which each successive volume also modeled after a fairy tale. Mortensen said the library has the second volume, Scarlet, as well.
Graceling is the first novel in a fantasy series by Kristin Cashore. Buzzfeed credits its protagonist, Katsa, with being “the ideal heroine.” Katsa is cursed with the “grace” of killing in a society that fears and exploits people who are born with extreme skills or graces.
There are many more fantasy and science fiction worlds to explore among the Buzzfeed recommendations; several can be found in the Jackson County Library Services catalog or as eBooks or audio books via Library 2 Go.
