SRCS board to review ‘Summer School’ highlights

Among highlights of the Sept. 13 meeting of the Board of Trustees, Santa Rosa City Schools, is a summary of general data and highlights of Summer Extended Learning Programs.

Over the summer, I worked as a classroom aide for high-school credit recovery, which allowed high-school students to complete credits for graduation or access courses that would help them meet university entrance requirements.

Other “Summer School” programs included a Maker Camp and Mike Hauser/Making Opportunities Via Education (MOVE) programs.

I’m not privy to hard-facts data specific to our summer programs, but one of the reasons I’ve long promoted Summer Reading at public libraries is the effect of reading to help prevent “summer slide” or loss of learning that occurs over summer. (Sonoma County Library recently concluded its Summer Reading offerings for children, young people and adults.)

For this reason, I was thrilled to help with Summer School for SRCS students.

I’m appreciative that the school board is considering “next steps” and other extended-year opportunities.

As the “Rationale” states on SRCS’ Sept. 13 meeting agenda:

“Summer Extended Learning Programs are a critical component of our learning plan for students in grades Kinder Academy through twelfth grade. For elementary and middle school students, extended learning opportunities help students to build and maintain their academic skills, provides opportunities to use technology, and includes project-based learning to enrich their educational experience and prepare them for the next level in their education.”

This paralibrarian with especial interest in young people’s library services, is deeply appreciative of programs that support children’s learning all year ’round.
