Among things seen that I liked during a recent visit to Rohnert Park and Santa Rosa, Calif., the Free Bookmobile of Sonoma County gives away free books at locations throughout the region.

According to Glen Weaver writing on the organization’s website, the Free Bookmobile got its start as a weekend family service project. It relies on donations from individual collections, publisher and bookstore overstock, as well as library “extras.” The Free Bookmobile then “passes books forward.” Its regular venues include schools, community centers, parks and homeless shelters.

What a great service, and I’m especially intrigued that it began as a family project. I’ve long been interested in mobile library outreach and as a volunteer and advocate, I focus my own efforts on libraries, books and reading.

The Free Bookmobile is offered as a program of the Sonoma County Public Library Foundation, an organization that also supports “The Big Read” and Sonoma County public libraries.
