Common Core: Emphasis on evidence

A broadcast on NPR’s All Things Considered about Common Core State Standards points to a significant shift in how children are taught to engage with text.

The Nov. 11 broadcast, “Common Core Reading: ‘The New Colossus’,” is first in a four-part series about reading in the Common Core era.

Instead of tying what they read to their personal experiences, children are taught to cite what they read for evidence in all that they say or write.

The advantage of the latter approach, according to David Liben of Student Achievement Partners, is that “all” children can cite evidence.

Liben believes that tying what they read to direct experience gives an unfair advantage to “privileged” children who have had that experience.
