Jackson County homeowners will pay the maximum tax rate possible for the first year under the Jackson County Library District, as reported July 17 by the Medford Mail Tribune.
For the Mail Tribune, Damian Mann reported that the district board approved tapping the full 60 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation ($90) the first year, to meet “an unexpectedly large financial obligation” — including having to pay for 17 months of operations instead of only 12.
The district also agreed to assume costs contributed by Ashland, Talent and White City communities to have additional hours in their libraries.
In a July 20 editorial, the Mail Tribune says the district is trying to do too much. It recommends the district get through its first 17 months before it talks about adding hours.
“Creating the library district was the right thing to do. Maxing out the budget before the new system even gets off the ground is not.”
