Even librarians can read more

An essay posted this week at Personal Branding Blog has direct relevance to a recent online chat that addressed advice for people who are new to working in a library. Nance Rosen argues that the most successful business people read, way beyond their business field.

“They consume poetry, fiction, science, philosophy, science fiction, science fantasy, religion, psychology and then some. Without these references, you are doomed to lose prestige when your product knowledge is no longer at issue.”

Of course, familiarity with a variety of genres is crucial for reader advisory, the ability to help a library patron locate material that he or she may enjoy. But even library professionals can benefit from examining their personal “education deficit” and considering what books they can read to expand their point of view.
