Oregon Reads 2014: ‘for children and teens too’

“Oregon Reads 2014 is for children and teens too!” On the Southern Oregon Education Service District librarians’ listserv, Library Materials Specialist Kelly Bryant passed along information from Katie Anderson, youth services consultant, with the Oregon State Library.

The Oregon Library Association (OLA) is commemorating the centennial of William Staffard who, according to the OLA, is “Oregon’s most celebrated poet.”

Among its selections for Oregon Reads 2014, Anderson indicated that Stafford’s Everyone Out Here Knows is a picture book appropriate for children.

“The Osage Orange Tree is graphic literature appropriate for teens, and Ask Me is also appropriate for teens—perhaps good material for a poetry slam!”

Oregon Reads 2014 is a “statewide community reading project,” according to the OLA, which last asked Oregonians to read the same book in celebration of the Oregon Sesquicentennial in 2009. The goal of the OLA is to involve 80,000 Oregonians in the centennial celebration of William Stafford.
