I’ve been hired as Library Assistant at Bellview Elementary School in the Ashland School District. Doug Werner works in the library during the earliest part of the school day and I arrive after him to work a three-hour shift.

My time shelving children’s books at the Middletown Public Library directly influenced my ability to sort books during the job interview. The books’ classification labeling was similar to labeling found on books in the public library children’s room.

Once again, volunteer activities have yielded professional benefits.

This intrigues me

During my first visit to the Bellview library, I was intrigued by a poster proclaiming the Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB), third- to fifth-grade division. OBOB is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries in conjunction with a Library Services and Technology Act grant. Students in third through 12th grades are exposed to quality literature that represents a variety of literary styles and viewpoints.

OBOB’s mission is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students.
