Student IDs access public library resources

Intriguing news in the latest eBulletin from Santa Rosa City Schools: Effective March 5, all SRCS students will be able to use their student ID number in the Sonoma County Library system to check out books and access online materials.

This library technician will be watching for further news, so I can promote these resources.

I’d read about this concept in American Libraries magazine in January 2016. As explained by writer Timothy Inklebarger, a student’s numerical ID acts like a “library card” and allows the student access to books and online databases of downloadable content.

I’m excited about students becoming lifetime users of libraries through such simplified and streamlined access, and am thrilled that students in SRCS can make use in this way of resources through the Sonoma County Library system.

According to the eBulletin from SRCS, students will be able to check out up to 10 books at any Sonoma County Library location.

Students will be able to use online materials including music, eBooks and magazines, and can also log in to receive free online, one-on-one homework tutoring. Parents will be responsible for their children’s use of library resources.
