Jackson County libraries: Where to write in support

An official notice for Wednesday’s public hearing regarding funding options for Jackson County Library Services can be viewed or downloaded in PDF format at
“Unless sustainable funding is secured for library services, the 14 satellite branch libraries (Applegate, Ashland, Butte Falls, Central Point, Eagle Point, Gold Hill, Jacksonville, Phoenix, Prospect, Rogue River, Ruch, Shady Cove, Talent, and White City) will be closed as of June 1, 2014. If sustainable funding isn’t secured by July 1, 2015, the Medford Library will close.
“During the fiscal year 2013-2014 budget hearings, the budget committee made additional cuts to those already recommended by the County Administrator. In an effort to save the library program, among others, Commissioner [Don] Skundrick proposed implementing a surcharge to free up operating funds to continue funding programs in danger of further cuts or closure. A survey was conducted and revealed that 57 percent of likely voters opposed the surcharge.
“The Jackson County Board of Commissioners requested this public hearing for inquiry on funding ideas and options from citizens.”
The hearing takes place during a regular meeting of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners, 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Courthouse Auditorium, 10 S. Oakdale Ave. in Medford.

For those library supporters who communicate better in writing, Jackson County Commissioners Doug Breidenthal, John Rachor and Skundrick can be reached via email at, and

Letters to the editor can be submitted to the Ashland Daily Tidings,, and to the Medford Mail Tribune,
